Today is the official last day of Spring Break for Oldest. I think she had a good week off, although it went rather fast. She had an essay due today and she had all month to do it, she waited until this week to finally sit down and write. She is the biggest procrastinator, when it comes to writing reports. But she can text all day long. Typical 12 year old, I guess.

Wednesday we took the day and drove about an hour and a half up north to go the Heritage Park and Zoological Sanctuary. First time we had been there and we have been in Arizona for 3 years. It was small but had some great animals. We seen an Eagle, a Black Bear, 2 foxes, a porcupine, a tiger, a brown bear that was asleep the first time we walked through, but woke up for lunch. They also have a Mexican Grey Wolf that is Endangered, whom they call Jake. That is what is great about this zoo, each animal had its own story on how it came to live here. Be it injured, abandoned, or a zoo closing. There was also petting zoo with some goats. Oldest went in first and then asked L if she wanted to pet the goats. I was really amazed that she said yes. And she did pet and brushed a white one that was an attention hog. They had Llamas but you weren’t allowed to pet them since they spit. We got some nice pictures to commemorate the day and it only took a couple of hours to walk through. The weather was perfect, only in the high 60’s up there, but when we got home it was a hot 86 degrees. Hubby and I were both worried that Little L was going to be a handful but she was very good. She followed us around and stayed with us the entire time. We were both happy because at the beginning of the week I was threatening to take the zoo trip away because she was a mess and a half for a couple of days. I think the outing did us all some good!

Today we have stayed at home and I did some Spring cleaning for the first day of Spring. Now I have the rest of the afternoon to do nothing, except chase a 2 year old around.

Happy first day of Spring and thanks for reading! 🙂

December 1st

It was a quiet evening, this December 1st. Little L was playing in her bubble bath, I was sitting on the bed, using my tablet. Hubby had just finished his dinner and went back out to the garage. Oldest was doing what Oldest does best…on the computer. My mom went in to let the dog in to eat. All of a sudden there was a ton of noise and lots of stomping coming from the kitchen. At first I was thought the dog was playing, but then I heard my mom say, “Something’s wrong, he’s dying!” I jumped up, threw my tablet on the bed and took off through the house yelling for Oldest to yell for her dad. When I rounded the corner, Apollo was standing in the middle of the kitchen head down. He looked up at me sideways and started trying to walk. But he was stomping. All four feet, stomping and legs going everywhere. He was trying to eat his dinner but he couldn’t stand. Oldest came back in and she headed to the bath to take care of L, who was crying. Hubby finally made it in and I told him what I saw, and he grabbed the flashlight and went out back. He didn’t know if someone had thrown something over the wall to make him sick or worse. Apollo wobbled back to his bowl and started to eat. I stayed and watched and he was standing with no problem, eating normally. He finished, turned around and walked through the kitchen like nothing happened. I told my mom and hubby that I think his feet were asleep. I hadn’t heard him for awhile and usually he wants in at dinner time. He must have fallen asleep and when mom called for him, he wasn’t fully “awake”.

Silly dog! 🙂

Black Cat

I once owned a black cat. Her name was Blackie. I know, really original, but what can I say, I was only like 10. She was a good cat, stayed outdoors, never strayed. She didn’t ask to come in the house until she was much older and it was a very cold winter night. After that, she would just go out during the day and only come in at night. I never once thought of her as bad luck. Watching her from the kitchen window, rolling around in the dirt always brought a smile to my face. I came across some interesting facts about black cats and since it is nearing Halloween, thought it would be fun to share. blackcat4

  1. The Ancient Egyptians revered all cats as sacred, helpful and lucky. They were the symbol of Bastet, the cat-headed goddess of protection.
  2. Sometime during the Middle Ages, Europeans got the idea that black cats were associated with witchcraft. Some elderly, solitary women who often fed and cared for stray cats were misidentified as witches and the cats as their conspirators.
  3. In parts of England and Ireland, a black cat cross your path signifies good luck.
  4. Speaking of Great Britain, giving a cat to a bride in the English Midlands should bring good luck.
  5. In Scotland, a strange black cat arriving at your home means you may win the jackpot! A stray black cat arriving on your doorstep signals prosperity.
  6. If you’re German, you have to pay attention. If the cat crosses your path from right to left, that’s bad; left to right is good.
  7. If you’re a pirate, it gets even more complicated. If the black cat is walking toward you, it’s bad luck. If it’s walking away, that’s good. If the cat walks onto the ship and then back off, get off the ship because it’s going to sink.
  8. Fishermen and their wives saw black cats as good luck, with many keeping them on their ships or in their homes. Black cats became so highly valued that some could not afford them.
  9. In Japan, black cats are considered symbols of good luck, especially for single women. Owning a black cat is thought to attract potential suitors.
  10. In Russia, all cats are viewed as lucky.
  11. There is no one breed of black cat. There are 19 cat breeds in the Cat Fanciers Association directory that list “black” as a color option.
  12. Many black cats have golden eyes, which is the result of their high melanin pigment content.
  13. Black cats can be boys or girls, but more are male than female.
  14. Black Cat Appreciation Day is August 17.
  15. Black cats go with every décor, and, best of all, you can’t see their fur on your furniture!
  16. It’s bad luck to walk under a ladder that a black cat just passed. However, we would also suggest that it’s just good common sense not to walk under any ladder, whether or not a cat of any color is nearby.

Many rescues suspend adoptions of black cats around Halloween. If you have a black cat, it is a good idea to keep them indoors on or near the Halloween holiday. Also keep all pets indoors on Halloween; the increased foot traffic, noises and costumes can be frightening to many pets.
